Ripon I have used the ‘mini-roles’ building site box with a nursery class and it was a great success in numerous ways. Both boys and girls accessed and enjoyed using the full range of contents and their subsequent play extended in all six areas of learning. The language that arose from the children’s reasoning, planning and idea sharing was rich and purposeful and even the most reluctant speakers became animated under the guise of a hard hat!
Co-operation, negotiation and sustained shared thinking were notable areas of significant development. The quality of the contents was high and the products were chosen with thought, with obvious attention to detail and an understanding of what really fires children’s imagination.
I would encourage any setting to buy a mini-roles bin as they not only contain an extensive range of equipment but it seems to release a new found sense of imagination for many children developing new experiences, language and life skills.
